Description
This is a restored copy of Noah's Ark, a circa 1876 hand colored lithograph by Currier & Ives, New York City.
Currier and Ives was a very popular American lithography company headquartered in New York City from 1835 to 1907. It was begun by Nathaniel Currier, and later expanded with Currier's partner James Merritt Ives. The highly productive Currier & Ives company created and manufactured decorative art lithographs from paintings by popular famous artists as black and white lithographs that were then hand colored by C & I employees. During the 19th century and first half of the 20th century most American home decor featured at least one Currier & Ives framed print.
Noah's Ark is the great wooden ship built by Noah & Co. in the Biblical Genesis great flood legend by which God saves Noah, his family, and one pair of each of the earth's animals from a worldwide massive flood. This ancient legend from the Book of Genesis occurs in various forms, in the Quran, where the Ark shows up as Safinat Nūḥ and al-fulk.
